Press Play: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

In our 9th edition of Press Play we chatted with  Amy Monahan, the Area Director of the NYC Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. AFSP works in all 50 states and they are currently organizing the Out of the Darkness Walks. Watch their videos here.

NYXT: What is Out of Darkness Walk?

Out of Darkness Walk is AFSP's signature fundraising series which brings together friends, family, and supporters in more than 400 communities nationwide. Within NYC, we have 5 Out of the Darkness Community Walks in September and October.

NYXT: Why is important to participate in this type of activities?

Participating in the Out of the Darkness Walks helps to give people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss, and the platform to change our culture's approach to mental health while raising funds for a great cause.

NYXT: What are the main goals that AFSP currently has?

AFSP’s mission is to Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide and we do this through funding research, providing suicide prevention educational programming as well as provide our loss and healing programs to our community.

NYXT: What is next for AFSP and how can people get involved?

You can get involved with your local chapter by attending their local Out of the Darkness Walk at www.afsp.org/walk  or getting more information about AFSP at www.afsp.org.
