Spaces like the Chocolate Factory Theater would not be possible without the intervention of artistic preservationists and elected officials who are striving to keep New York City a center of creativity. Commercial and residential gentrification has displaced many of the city’s artisans because of unaffordable rents, and the Theater feared a similar fate, standing to lose their home in Hunters Point since 2005. With the help of Councilmembers Jimmy Van Bramer and Cathy Nolan, Borough Presidents Melinda Katz and Helen Marshall, and a community that longed for a center for artistic freedom, the Theater was able to find a permanent home in Dutch Kills, where they will open for their 2019 season.
