Where to NYXT? Fall In Love With Reading by Reading Partners

Reading Partners mobilizes communities to provide students with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade, and we talked with their Development Coordinator, Alexis Walls. You can enjoy their videos at nyxt.nyc/readingpartners, and on September 27th they will hold the third annual Fall In Love With Reading event at LinkedIn New York to support the organization’s growing work.

NYXT: What is Fall In Love With Reading?

Alexis: Fall in Love With Reading is our annual Associate Board event this year. Attendees will be given the opportunity to network with other professionals about education and giving back to the community all while enjoying dinner and drinks at LinkedIn in the Empire State Building.

NYXT: Why is important to participate in this type of activities?

Alexis: There’s a myriad of reasons why it’s important for people to participate in these activities. First and foremost is the importance of coming together as individuals to partner with an organization to support a worthy cause. In addition, networking with professionals from different industries over the common interest of education and giving back to the community, aside from those varying industries, results in a powerful force of people willing to initiate lasting change. All in all, proceeds from activities such as these go directly towards improving the literacy levels of the youth in this city and in turn unlocking a world of opportunity for them.

NYXT: What are the main goals that Reading Partners currently has?

Alexis: As Reading Partners kicks off the school year, we are aiming to enroll at least 1,180 students across New York City. To do so we plan on recruiting over 1300 community volunteers to support those students as their reading partners throughout their school year.

NYXT: What is next for Reading Partners and how can people get involved?

Alexis: It’s time for Reading Partners to get back into our schools after the summer and continue to do good for those who need it most. Of the 1300 volunteers, we will recruit, you can find working professionals to students and everyone in between. Giving just 1 hour a week to contribute to this cause can and will change the lives of the students here in New York City. People can get involved by visiting our website and signing up to volunteer today at https://newyork19.my-trs.com/
