Press Play: National Alliance on Mental Illness

In Press Play we chat with some of NYXT’s video content partners. In this edition, we are talking with Matt Kudish, the Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City. They are based in Manhattan and you can find their video content at nyxt.nyc/naminyc/

NYXT: What is NAMI’s and what is your professional experience?

MATT: NAMI was founded about 35 years ago, and our mission is to help individuals and families impacted by mental illness, build better lives through support, education and advocacy.

I am social worker by training and for the last 15 years or so I worked in aging, neurocognitive disorders, and over that time I started to move away from the direct service and more into administration and management. I got really excited by the idea of running a non-profit organization, and I went back and got a Masters Degree in Public Administration, and about the time that program was ending, I was approached with the opportunity to take on this role, at NAMI NYC.

NYXT: What is NAMI’s mission?

MATT: We offer five classes for individuals living with a mental health diagnoses as well as their friends and their families. We have over thirty support groups that take place every month. And we have public education events and opportunities to combat stigma and increase awareness of mental health and mental illnesses issues, so that people who are struggling know where they can go for help.

NYXT: How does NAMI NYC work?

MATT: We really value the concept of lived experience. So that if you are taking our classes, or you are in a support group, or you call the helpline, you are talking to somebody who understands because they have been there, they walked in your shoes.

NYXT: How can people connect with NAMI NYC?
MATT: The best way to connect with NAMI NYC is to call our helpline: 212-684-3264.

You can reach out to us if you want to learn more about our programs and services, or if you would like us to come to your local community and do a presentation, we would love to be there.
